Meet Joshua Bee Alafia

Joshua Bee Alafia’s meditation practice began in 1989 when his mother gave him a mantra to work with. This sparked a rich journey into different styles from the Hawaiian Shamanic, Hindu, Sufi, Dzogchen, Taoist, and Vipassana traditions. Wanting to bring Vipassana practice to the youth, he began teaching mindfulness practice to incarcerated, court-involved, and system vulnerable youth through New York’s Lineage Project in 2010. He is a Community Dharma Leaders training graduate through Spirit Rock Meditation Center. He currently teaches mindfulness meditation with South Side Insight in Chicago and Taoist Meditation with Immortal Arts Chicago.  He is the founder of Liberation Center Worldwide, which builds meditation/wellness centers internationally and the founder and co-executive director of South Side Liberation Center in Chicago.  He currently resides in Santa Monica and teaches Inner Power programs with The Good Seed serving youth as they transition out of homelessness.

"I would like to leave behind me the conviction that if we maintain a certain amount of caution and organization we deserve victory. You cannot carry out fundamental change without a certain amount of madness. In this case, it comes from nonconformity, the courage to turn your back on the old formulas, the courage to invent the future. It took the madmen of yesterday for us to be able to act with extreme clarity today. I want to be one of those madmen. We must dare to invent the future." — Thomas Sankara, 1985

“This is my simple religion. There is no need for temples; no need for complicated philosophy. Our own brain, our own heart is our temple; the philosophy is kindness.” — The Dali Lama
